WELS President Mark Schroeder has appointed Rev. Harmon Lewis, pastor at Saving Grace, Mobile, Ala., as the new chairman for WELS Committee on Relief. Rev. Philip Schupmann, pastor at Resurrection, Aurora, Ill., and a member of the committee since 1990, recently concluded his second four-year term as chairman. The WELS Constitution limits the Committee on Relief chairman to two terms..jpg)
Lewis says, "Pastor Schupmann was a blessing to our church during a time of major disaster. He guided the Committee on Relief in the days that followed 9/11 and was a tireless and dedicated leader during the many years of rebuilding that took place in the wake of Hurricane Katrina."
The Committee on Relief assists people in need, both after a disaster and because of a personal crisis. The committee's help comes in many forms, including monetary donations, supplies, or manpower. When possible, volunteers also share the good news of the gospel to comfort those who are suffering.
Lewis knows about the Committee on Relief from firsthand experience after Hurricane Katrina. The committee provided comfort and support to Saving Grace's members, as well as community members, whose properties suffered significant damage from the hurricane. Saving Grace now also houses and deploys one of the committee's disaster relief trailers.
If you know a congregation or individual who could benefit from the support of WELS Committee on Relief, contact Lewis at 251-753-3507 or via e-mail: welscor@gmail.com
