Operations of Home, World Missions combine

In an effort to better serve WELS administrative committees, district mission boards, and home and world missionaries, the office operations of Home and World Missions have combined. According to Mr. Mel Schuler, director of missions operations, this will streamline the workflow and make the overall operation of both Home and World Missions more efficient.

"We've been doing more cultural and ethnic work within the States in recent years," says Schuler. "The lines between Home and World Missions were crossing over a bit, so we decided to combine the administration."

Initial discussions regarding the office merger began early in 2008. The proposal was approved by the Joint Mission Council and both boards, and Schuler began as director of missions operations last July. Since then, he has been working with both areas of ministry to find ways to coordinate efforts. "This does not bring the two ministries together," says Schuler. "It just joins the office staff for a more effective working relationship."

Although it has yet to be seen if this move will result in a cost savings for Home or World Missions, Schuler says, "Hopefully we will be able to do some things that we have neglected in the past."
