Flood victims in India receive aid from WELS

WELS sponsored two trucks filled with food to bring relief to 1,000 families in India on Oct. 22. Hundreds of thousands of people in India were evacuated from their homes in early October with little more than the clothes on their backs because of severe flooding.

"It is hard to see such suffering and hardship and not do something," says Mark Krueger, one of WELS' counselors in India.

So, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Ministries, WELS' sister church in India, appealed to WELS Committee on Relief for funds, and was granted $10,000. The church body in India worked with area officials to identify the families that needed aid the most. Then, on Oct. 22, two national pastors, 34 pre-seminary students, and two employees of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Ministries spent 12 hours delivering food to families in need.

Krueger reports, "All who received the supplies did so with great gratitude. The recipients asked that their thanks be expressed to the people in America who were so generous to them. When they thanked the students who were distributing the food, the students again and again said, 'Don't thank us. Thank Jesus. He is showing his love.' "
