First MLC performance in world mission field

For the first time, students from Martin Luther College (MLC), New Ulm, Minn., will perform a sacred concert in a world mission field. Fifty-two students will travel to Mexico Mar. 13-16 as part of MLC's annual choir tour. This year's tour, which runs Mar. 7-20, also includes performances at congregations in Arizona and Texas.

Dr. Mark Lenz, MLC's choir tour manager, says the idea of performing in Mexico came from a renewed emphasis on missions at MLC. "Our students have been inspired to bring the message of Jesus to people across the world, so I think it will be wonderful for them to experience a new culture and gain some firsthand knowledge of our synod's work in a foreign mission."

The students will be performing at three different locations in Mexico: at the congregation in Torreón, at a mission station in Zaragoza Sur (Torreón), and at the congregation in Monterrey. Lenz anticipates many people in the audience will be hearing a sacred concert—and God's Word—for the first time. "It's going to be a real opportunity to spread the gospel in song," says Lenz. "We pray the Holy Spirit will use that music to work in people's hearts." In addition to traditional Lutheran pieces, the choir will be singing two selections in Spanish and engaging the audiences with some of Mexico's popular folk songs.

When they are not performing, Lenz says students are encouraged to explore the communities, visit shops, and talk to people. "We want to open their eyes to another culture and see what life is like in a third-world country," he says. "And we're hoping it's just going to inspire the students all the more for spreading the wonderful message, wherever the Lord places them."
