Cameroon update

Filed Under: Africa, BWM, Cameroon, Missions, World Missions

In a breaking news edition of "Together" on Friday, prayers were requested for two WELS pastors and their families currently in Cameroon. Reports say as many as 20 people have been killed in rioting there as the African nation experiences the worst violence it has seen in 15 years.

The last word from Rev. Dan Myers, missionary to Cameroon, was that he and his wife Peggy and their daughter were safe and that they were accompanying Rev. Ron Uhlhorn and his wife Kay from the city of Kumba to Douala. Uhlhorn—Board for World Missions African Committee liaison—was on a field visit to Cameroon when the violence broke out a week ago. In their last correspondence Friday, the Uhlhorns said they were scheduled to fly out of Doula to Switzerland early Tuesday morning CST.

News reports from Cameroon indicate calm appears to be returning across the country in the wake of demonstrations sparked, in part, when the country’s president announced he wanted to amend the constitution to allow him to run for another term.

On Friday, the United States Embassy in Cameroon issued a warning encouraging all Americans to evacuate. As the violence has eased, the statement has been amended to urge all Americans to exercise strong caution and to avoid unnecessary travel.

We will provide more updates on the situation as they become available.
