WELS sends aid to Peru

WELS Committee on Relief has donated $20,000 for victims of the Aug. 15 earthquake in Peru—through WELS’ sister synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS). The earthquake, which measured 8.2 on the Richter scale, left over 500 people dead and 85,000 homeless.
WELS Committee on Relief immediately contacted the ELS after the earthquake and pledged up to $25,000 in assistance. After several months of sorting through short-term needs and long-term goals to restore mission efforts, Rev. Terry Schultz, ELS missionary in Peru, requested $20,000.
Schultz reports the contribution will be pooled with other donations from the Evangelical Lutheran Free Church (Germany) and ELS’ Committee on Relief to help members of ELS congregations in southern Peru, including Canete, Chincha, and San Clemente.
Assistance provided to date includes carloads of blankets, water, food, and donations for the purchase of building materials to rebuild homes, including some that were used for home churches. Plans are also being made to construct a multi-purpose building in Chincha for children whose homes and school were wiped out in the earthquake.
