For the first time, WELS will utilize online video streaming to provide live coverage of a Christmas concert for military troops stationed around the world. The service will be streamed from Christ, Pewaukee, Wis., on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.. CST. WELS President Mark Schroeder will also be delivering a special Christmas message to troops.
"I will certainly be expressing how much we appreciate their willingness to fight and put themselves in harm's way so that we have the freedom to worship our Savior the way we do," says Schroeder. "I think [this service] is a way to show them we're certainly always thinking of them and they're never far from our thoughts and prayers."
Although it will be early morning on the other side of the world when this service is streamed, Carl Ziemer, administrator for WELS Special Ministries, hopes many deployed troops will be able to access computers and watch online.
"There's a special appreciation when they can feel as though they are worshiping with their own people," says Ziemer. "God-willing we will be able to do more things like this in the future. We definitely want to get much more involved with direct support for the military and their loved ones."
The service will be broadcast on WELS' Internet media network, Streams (http://streams.wels.net). In addition to traditional hymns and carols, the concert will feature music by Christian contemporary band Koiné.
