Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary enrollment remains steady

Student enrollment figures for the 2007-08 school year have been released by Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary (WLS) in Mequon, Wis. A total of 175 men are continuing their studies for the pastoral ministry: 41 seniors; 40 vicars; 47 middlers (second-year students); 46 juniors (first-year students); and one colloquy student make up the current student body. Figures remained steady against last year’s enrollment of 176.

In addition to these on-campus students, 30 men are participating in the Pastoral Studies Institute (PSI) program via two satellite seminaries, the Asian Seminary Satellite Training Program, and Cristo Palabra de Vida (a Spanish language satellite training program). The PSI offers non-traditional students of various ethnic groups a flexible and innovative path of study that leads to pastoral ministry.

“The growth in the PSI program over the past five years has been exponential,” says Rev. Paul Wendland, WLS president. Wendland says PSI will never replace the traditional seminary program, but it does allow WELS to expand its ministry in an increasingly diverse society. “We literally have the world coming to our shores. We have an astonishing opportunity to share the gospel right here at home.”
